Um sie vom gleichnamigen Bundesstaat zu unterscheiden, wird sie im Englischen New York City oder kurz NYC genannt.
Ihr Gebiet umfasst die fünf Boroughs genannten Stadtbezirke Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens und Staten Island. Diese sind in weitere Stadtteile gegliedert. Die Metropolregion New York mit 18,8 Mio. Einwohnern ist einer der bedeutendsten Wirtschaftsräume und Handelsplätze der Welt, Sitz vieler internationaler Konzerne und Organisationen (so auch der Vereinten Nationen) und wichtiger Hafen an der amerikanischen Ostküste. Die Stadt genießt mit ihrer großen Anzahl an Sehenswürdigkeiten, den 500 Galerien, etwa 200 Museen, mehr als 150 Theatern und mehr als 18.000 Restaurants Weltruf in den Bereichen Kunst und Kultur.
Der Spitzname der Stadt lautet Big Apple.

Wall Street, in Lower Manhattan, has been a dominant global financial center since World War II and is home to the New York Stock Exchange. The city has been home to several of the tallest buildings in the world, including the Empire State Building and the twin towers of the former World Trade Center.
