Rennes (bretonisch: Roazhon, gallo: Resnn, lateinisch: Condate) ist die heutige Hauptstadt der französischen Region und des früheren Herzogtums Bretagne. Zugleich ist Rennes Präfektursitz des Départements Ille-et-Vilaine. Mit einer Bevölkerung von 207.922 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Januar 2007) ist Rennes die zehnte unter den bevölkerungsreichsten Städten Frankreichs.
Rennes liegt im Nordwesten Frankreichs, im Osten der Bretagne an der Mündung der Ille in die Vilaine und erstreckt sich auf einer Fläche von 50,39 Quadratkilometer. Die Stadt erlebt seit ein paar Jahren einen großen Aufschwung. Im Großraum Rennes leben heute 550.000 Einwohner.
