Ankara ist seit 1923 die Hauptstadt der Türkei und der gleichnamigen Provinz Ankara. Die Stadt hat über 4 Mio. Einwohner (2008) und ist damit nach Istanbul die zweitgrößte Stadt des Landes. Ankara ist nicht nur das Verwaltungszentrum der Türkei, sondern neben Istanbul und Izmir auch eines der größten Wirtschaftszentren des Landes sowie Sitz mehrerer Universitäten.
Istanbul, früher Konstantinopel, auf dem antiken Byzantion gelegen, ist die größte Stadt der Türkei. Sie war 1600 Jahre lang Hauptstadt zweier Weltreiche: Des Oströmischen beziehungsweise des Byzantinischen Reiches sowie des Osmanischen Reiches. Die Stadt nimmt mit knapp 12,6 Millionen Einwohnern den dritten Platz unter den bevölkerungsreichsten Städten der Welt ein. Istanbul erstreckt sich sowohl auf der europäischen als auch auf der asiatischen Seite des Bosporus und ist damit die einzige Metropole, die auf zwei Kontinenten liegt. Aufgrund ihrer circa 2.700-jährigen Geschichte gilt sie als eine der ältesten durchgehend besiedelten Städte der Welt. Istanbul ist eine Weltstadt von globaler Bedeutung und das Kultur-, Finanz-, Handels- und Medienzentrum der Türkei sowie sein größter Verkehrsknotenpunkt. In der Stadt befinden sich zahlreiche Universitäten, Theater, Museen, Moscheen und andere Baudenkmäler. Istanbul ist der Sitz des ökumenischen Patriarchen aller Ostkirchen und war bis 1924 Sitz des Kalifats. Die Altstadt ist Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO.

Istanbul is also a megacity, as well as the cultural and financial centre of Turkey. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbour known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330-395), the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395-1204 and 12611453), the Latin Empire (1204-1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1922). The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
