Cancale (bretonisch Kankaven) ist eine französische Kleinstadt in der nördlichen Bretagne im Département Ille-et-Vilaine. Sie liegt im Nordwesten der Bucht von Mont-Saint-Michel, etwa zehn Kilometer östlich von Saint-Malo, an der Côte d'Émeraude. Die Stadt hat 5293 Einwohner (Stand 1. Januar 2007). Sie teilt sich in zwei Stadtteile: Die Oberstadt (La Ville Haute) liegt in 45 m Seehöhe über der Bucht und ist das Zentrum mit Kirche, Markt und Geschäften. Der romantische Hafen (La Houle) liegt direkt am Meer und bietet gute Hotels und Restaurants.

Cancale bezeichnet sich selbst als die „Austernhauptstadt“ der Bretagne. Hier werden in der Gezeitenzone Austern gezüchtet, und zwar
- die Pazifische Felsenauster (5.000 t, Stand: 2000) und
- die seltenere Europäische Auster (1.000 t, Stand: 2000).
Beide genießen unter Kennern einen guten Ruf.

Die Austernzucht lässt sich in Cancale ab dem 13. Jahrhundert nachweisen. Heute bedeckt sie eine Fläche von 400 Hektar, 50 Betriebe beschäftigen je nach Jahreszeit 150 bis 300 Angestellte und erwirtschaften einen Umsatz von 3,8 Mio. Euro (Stand: 2000). Besucher können im Austernmuseum (La Ferme Marine) weiterführende Informationen über die Bedeutung der Austern erfahren.

Cancale (Breton: Kankaven; Gallo: Cauncall) is a commune in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany in north-western France. It is known as the birthplace of Saint Jeanne Jugan.

Cancale lies along the coast to the east of Saint-Malo. It is a picturesque fishing village popular with visitors, many of whom are drawn by its reputation as the "oyster capital" of Brittany. Though a small town, it is well served by a large number of restaurants, many specialising in seafood. When not eating one can sit and watch the bustle of this busy little town with many stalls selling crustaceans of all types.

There is a pleasant coastal path which permits a circular walk from the town to the Pointe du Grouin with views across the bay towards Mont Saint Michel.

Eugène Feyen painted Cancale and the inhabitants with the oyster-picking Cancalaises for several decades around 1865–1908. Vincent van Gogh wrote that "Eugène Feyen is one of the few painters who pictures intimate modern life as it is really, and does not turn it into fashion plates".
