A highlight of a visit to Istanbul is a ferry tour on the Bosporus. Our recommendation is the ferry of www.ido.com.tr for around US$15, which starts at the harbour Eminönu at the Galata bridge at the Golden Horn and goes up north to the small village of Anadoglu Kavagi at the Black Sea side of the Bosporus. The ferry stops for just a couple of minutes each at five villages on the way, allowing you nice closer looks.

The first picture shows the Dolmabahce Palace, the residence of the sultans since the middle of the 19. century.

The European Fortress (Rumeli Hisari) on the second picture has been built by Mehmed II. at the narrowest point of the Bosporus in his preparation of the siege of Constantinople. Behind the fortress you see the Faith Sultan Mehmed bridge.

The village Anadolu Kavagi at the Asian border of the Bosporus is the northern turning point of the tour. Further north the Bosporus becomes wider and wider until it merges into the Black Sea. The stop of more than two hours allows plenty of time for a hike to the Byzantine castle from the 14th century with a great view over the Bospurus as well as for a cosy lunch. Our recommendation: The fish menu at the "Yoros Restaurant" directly below the castle. Good value, plenty of food and great taste! The village has adjusted to the constant stream of visitors with plenty restaurants and a broad offering of tourist gimmicks.

On the way back one passes the Mecidiye Mosque, which has been erected by Sultan Abd ül-Medschid I. in the village of Ortaköy. Coming back to the Golden Horn the tour finishes with a nice view on the Süleymaniye Mosque and the Golden Tower of Beyoglu
